KATY CRIMINAL DEFENSE

ARRESTED IN KATY? THE COUNTY LINE MATTERS.

Katy sits across three counties — Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller. Which side of the line you were stopped on decides which courthouse, which prosecutors, and which rules apply to your case. I practice in all three.

THREE COUNTIES, ONE ARREST

Almost nowhere else in greater Houston creates this much confusion. A stop on I-10 near the Energy Corridor may land in Harris County. A few exits west, and the same stop becomes a Fort Bend County case handled in Richmond. North of the city, you can end up in Waller County in Hempstead. People routinely show up at the wrong courthouse.

That matters for more than logistics. Each county's district attorney charges cases differently, offers different pretrial diversion programs, and moves at a different speed. Knowing which system you are in — on day one — changes what your defense should look like.

KATY QUESTIONS

Which courthouse will my Katy case go to?+

It depends on exactly where the offense occurred. Cases from the Harris County side are handled at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center in downtown Houston. Fort Bend County cases go to the courthouse in Richmond, and Waller County cases to Hempstead. Class C misdemeanors written inside the city may go to the Katy Municipal Court instead. I can tell you which applies as soon as I see your paperwork.

I got a DWI on I-10 near Katy. What happens now?+

The I-10 corridor is one of the most heavily patrolled stretches in the region, and Katy-area DWI stops are common. You have roughly 15 days from arrest to request an ALR hearing or your license can be suspended automatically. Call before that deadline passes — it is the single most time-sensitive part of a DWI case.

Do you handle cases in Fort Bend County as well as Harris?+

Yes. I regularly appear in both, plus Waller, Montgomery, Polk, and San Jacinto. Katy clients often need someone who is comfortable in more than one county system, and that is exactly the practice I have built.

Is a first-time offense in Katy likely to stay on my record?+

Not necessarily. Depending on the charge, the county, and your history, options like pretrial diversion, deferred adjudication, or dismissal may be available — and later, expunction or nondisclosure. The earlier a lawyer is involved, the more of those doors stay open.
